Hmong Language Movement Courses

Overview

These online courses help learners read/write and speak Hmong. The courses are mostly self-paced and are particularly useful for adult learners who wish to relearn Hmong or learn it for the first time. Courses are built around modules that have lessons, practices, various forms of assessments, and projects. Learners sign up through Hmong Language Movement landing pages on Thinkific.com and have access to the course right away. These courses are currently taught by me.

Problem

Many people who identify as Hmong and wish to learn the Hmong language do not have the time or proximity to a Hmong community to do it. There are no engaging and consistent Hmong language learning materials online, and some language learning materials are created by non-Hmong people. Meanwhile, the language is in danger of losing many of its speakers because it is not being transferred from older generations to younger generations anymore.

Solution

Develop online courses that are accessible and engaging.

Design

Courses are developed using Robert Gagné's 9 Events of Instruction and task-based teaching/learning. Learners move through modules that contain chunked video lessons recorded on Loom and edited on iMovie. Video lessons are followed with downloadable worksheet practices and/or task-based homework assignments that not only assess learners’ comprehension but provides opportunities for learners to practice what they learned. In speaking courses, learners use available technology to complete video assignments that they turn in for feedback from the instructor. Courses are designed for everyone, but specifically those who do not have access to a Hmong community.
