Writing Center Handbook

 

Overview

The Writing Center at CSU Chico had been operating for years without a tutor handbook. Developing a handbook that was distributed to all tutors streamlined operations, tutor pedagogy, training, and impact on students who used Writing Center services.

Problem

The Writing Center had no official handbook and had been operating for years with center policies in various documents in a shared folder that only a few staff members had access to. When referencing center policies or preparing for training, staff had to remember where to find policies and training materials in the shared folder.

Solution

Research, consolidate, and design a tutor handbook that would contain center policies, operations, pedagogies, and training.

Design

At its core the design of the handbook considered accessibility and usability. The handbook was designed with Microsoft Word and turned into a PDF that was given to all tutors as part of the onboarding process. The handbook was also available in the shared folder. Consolidation of all Writing Center information allowed staff to use the handbook during training as well.
